Dental Veneers are thin custom-made shells of porcelain designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their colour, shape, size, or length.
In order to have veneers with optimal results, you should have good oral hygiene and habits, to avoid long-term tooth decay and gum problems. People who choose veneers want to make conservative and minor changes to their teeth.
These may include:
• Slight crowding • Unevenly sized teeth • Tooth discolouration • Gaps and spacing • Chips or fractures • Worn-down teeth
After you have consulted with our dentist, you should know if you are suitable for veneers and can move forward with scheduling the required appointments. There are a few steps involved in the process that requires impressions, creation of the ceramics and preparation of teeth.
The day of the procedure, the dentist will remove a small bit of enamel from each tooth to create a space for the veneer to adhere to and not impede the patient’s bite. Then a Veneer impression created in-house with special digital impression technology.
Temporary veneers are prepared and applied while the patient waits for the lab to create the permanent ones, which normally takes 2-3 weeks.
When the permanents arrive, the dentist will apply an acidic gel that dissolves minerals on the surface of each tooth so that there is a rough surface for the veneer to bond to solidly. Cementing the veneers in place is a quick process that involves a special light to speed the hardening process. Once the porcelain veneers are set, they will be bonded to the patient’s teeth.
You will typically have two visits to the dentist to prepare for a dental crown.
You can comfortably eat and drink as soon as your porcelain veneers are bonded. The most important thing to remember is to care for your veneers just like your actual teeth. This means daily brushing and flossing, a healthy diet, and routine dental visits are necessary to maintain your veneers for several years. Wearing a nightguard is recommended if you grind your teeth at night.
If you play any contact sports, it is wise to wear a custom athletic mouthguard.
